THE PENINSULA NEW YORK - A HISTORIC LANDMARK BUILDING
The Peninsula New York occupies a Landmark building—a property that has been designated by the Landmarks Preservation Commission as having special historic, cultural, and aesthetic significance to New York. The Beaux Arts building dates to 1905, when it debuted on one of the city’s most prestigious blocks as The Gotham Hotel. The building’s facade, with its limestone carvings, copper cornices and Doric columns, was intended to complement the neighboring University Club (built in 1900 and considered striking in its design).

THE MILESTONE HOTEL – LONDON'S STORIED OCCUPANTS EXTEND BACK TO 1689
In 1689, Foot Onslow, a Commissioner of Excise under William III, was the first occupant of the house. In 1691, George Davenant, an officer of the Royal Bodyguard and man who claimed Shakespeare as grandsire, sublet from Onslow. Lady Susan Belasyse, mistress of James II, then a Russian ambassador followed. In 1830, Kensington House served as a private asylum then an academy for young gentlemen then as a Jesuit seminary, whose pupil included the future King of France, Louis Philippe. Mrs. Anne Marie Lucena built Chenesiton House, No. 1 Kensington Court in 1883-1884. Mrs. Lucena’s ‘rags to riches’ story ended when she was murdered by her disturbed son-in-law. The first Baron Redesdale followed – diplomat, author and grandfather of the infamous Mitford sisters. The sisters included a socialist journalist, a liberal satirical novelist, a fascist, lovers of Hitler and Nazism, and a duchess.
