Copa Airlines: CM New DOT Regulation

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a regulation requiring airlines to offer refunds to passengers for additional services that were paid for, but not honored. The regulation will be implemented for flights beginning October 28, 2024.

The regulation applies to additional services for which passengers paid for, but did not receive, such as:

  • Pre-selection of Economy Cabin seats.
  • Upgrades to Business Class.
  • Checked baggage at additional: Extra checked baggage (paid for at WCI and at the airport), overweight baggage, oversized baggage, sporting goods and musical instruments.
  • Other additional services: Pets in Cabin, Copa Club Tickets and Unaccompanied Minor Service.

When does the refund apply?

  • If the airline is unable to fulfill any of these paid services, for reasons beyond the passenger's responsibility, passengers are entitled to a refund. Refunds will be automatically executed by the airline based on the travel information, where a comparison will be made between the paid services and what was granted on the day of the flight.
